Netflix is producing phenomenal animated TV shows these days, such as Tuca and Bertie, Disenchantment, The Midnight Gospel, and many others— but one of its best creations is Big Mouth, a highly graphic series about pubescent longings and growth pains. It offers a transparent depiction of adolescent life: acne, erections, orgasms— all of which occur under the tyrannical control of ancient beings known as Hormone Monsters.
Every one of the characters on Big Mouth is one of a kind, ranging from boys whotake sex advice from ghosts to girls dealing with parental divorce. We have created a moral alignment list for the major characters based on their individual personalities, arranged according to the system used in the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
Jessi Glaser -Lawful Good (Crusader)
Jessi Glaser is a smart, polite child, albeit with a tendency to look on the dark side. Even though she suffers from depression— arising from an uncomfortable combination of family issues and recently activated menstrual cycles— Jessi remains a good friend to Nick and Andrew (not so much a good daughter to her mother, seeing as she blames her for the divorce).
In true Crusader form, Jessi is usually the first to stand up for her rights, and those of women in general: the feminist spark in her tends to become a blazing fire when she sees rampant misogyny around her. For instance, when she reacts negatively to thedegenerate drama teacher when he sexualizes girls in her school; or when she discovers that she does not have to be ashamed of her body when she visits a women's bathhouse.
Nick Birch -Neutral Good (Benefactor)
Nick is a gentle boy, whose main frustration is the amount of time taken by his puberty to arrive and he rightly blames it on the worst Hormone Monster, ever: Rick. His parents are immensely supportive, often to the point of being nauseating, but their unconditional love has resulted in Nick being more mature than most in his grade.
As a Benefactor, Nick loves nothing more than being there for his friends when they need him, especially Andrew. He does sometimes show signs of self-doubt, especially when people make fun of him for being short or having small genitals. However, he is able to manage his temper and keep things under control, which is more than can be said for Andrew.
Andrew Glouberman -Chaotic Good (Rebel)
Andrew's awkwardness is only matched by his ability to make a fool of himself, even (especially) when he is trying to look cool. Even though he is, at heart, a good boy, his innate shyness and unsupportive parents result in him having some really strange (and incorrect) notions about sex.
For instance, when he demands that his ex-girlfriend, Missy, stop hanging out with Lars, he goes so far as to push the poor kid out of his wheelchair. Unlike Nick, Andrew can be very rebellious, as we see when he exchanges sexts with his cousin in Florida.
The Hormone Monstress/Connie -Lawful Neutral (Judge)
Connie begins as Jessi's Hormone Monstress, showing her the ropes of puberty— and even mediating a discussion between Jessi and her vagina. She performs her role with a seriousness appropriate to the situation, unlike Maurice whose pieces of "advice" are largely about masturbation and sex.
Connie takes care of Jessi above and beyond the call of duty, as we see when she manages to rescue her from the Depression Kitty. As a Judge, Connie does not take sides, showing no bias in terms of the teenagers she gets to handle— like when she becomes Nick's new Hormone Monstress (and does the job flawlessly.)
Coach Steve -True Neutral (Undecided)
Coach Steve is an indecipherable anomaly — he is an adult man, buthas the experience and knowledge of a child. He does not comprehend the nature of sex, considering it to be a form of exercise: for instance, when he talks about his mother's friend Gary coming over and "doing push-ups on her bed."
Steve's character is borderlineunreal in that he seems to land on his feet irrespective of his situation— as shown when he gets a series of jobs for which he has zero talent. He is the perfect True Neutral, showing no signs of negative emotion or prejudice; in fact, he tends to respond to even the harshest of criticisms with gratitude.
Jay Bilzerian -Chaotic Neutral (Free Spirit)
Jay is a Free Spirit, unfortunately, trapped in an abusive household with uncaring parents and violent brothers. Nevertheless, he manages to find joy in the simplest of things: be it imaginary sex with his pillow/cushion or his fantasies of living with the Birch family.
His zeal for magic is almost palpable, considering that he is genuinely goodat it— even though he gets no praise for his talents. Jay is allergic to authority figures, preferring to let his thoughts and actions roam free, like when he casually masturbates through his pants and proudly announces it to his friends.
Judd Birch -Lawful Evil (Dominator)
Judd is basically an emo, but with a violent streak— he seems to find a dark joy in hurting people (even if it's only slashing tires.) Judd's attitude towards life is streaked with negativity, seeing as he calls himself an "agent of chaos," but this is most likely because he wants to rebel against hisparents.
In fact, he takes on the role of the Dominator simply to get a rise out of his parents, whose considerate nature repulses him— this never works out, as they seem to accept any horrible thing he does as a simple phase of adolescent life. Judd also shows signs of power-hunger, as shown when he enslaves a bunch of raccoons to do his bidding.
The Hormone Monster/Maury -Neutral Evil (Malefactor)
Maury seems like a pleasant enough monster, but his constant distractions are exhausting. There have been several times when Andrew has been in an uncomfortable situation because he paid attention tohis hormone monster's words. Maury doesn't care if Andrew is at school or at Nick's house— he simply wants Andrew to give in to his base desires.
In one case, Andrew was caught masturbating to Leah's panties in the Birch pool house: Andrew was dying of shame, but Maury found the situation even more of a turn on.As a classic Malefactor,Maury only cares about himself and uses Andrew to get what he wants, whether it is sexual gratification or an aggressive outburst.
Missy Foreman-Greenwald - Lawful Good (Crusader)
Missy is a sweet, passionate girl who sees the world through a childish lens — although this might be because of her parents' incessant control over activities. While she does come off as meek and awkward, Missy behaves like a true Crusader when she has a stance she really believes in.
For instance, she refused to wear skimpy clothing like all the other girls to protest the school'ssexist dress requirement. However, when her peers shame her for not standing up for women, Missy blows her top at them because she refuses to tolerate anyone else telling her what to do— with the implication that feminism can take any form, including that of modesty.
Marty Glouberman -Chaotic Evil (Destroyer)
One of the worst characters in the show is Marty Glouberman, Andrew's father. Marty is, at best, an abusive dad (although his relationship with his wife, Barbara, seems to be filled with love.) In one scene, Marty forces Andrew to wax his mustache, simply because he could not stand the sight of it.
His anger issues are typical of a Destroyer— he implies that he hates his own son, resulting in Andrew growing up with shattered confidence. Marty can beselfish at times, demanding that events happen the way he wants it, like when he eats scallops even though he knows the gassy consequences will bother his wife.
